J. Abrams is some suburban kid who grew up watching TV (but not "Star Trek"). He lacks the life experience and soul to further that vision of the future. Exactly right. It completely lacked the soul of the franchise. And that's pretty much what the old movies were like. It was the show that had all the slow-paced thought experiments. But it's like you said, the substance that was there was a lot better. It's sad because you could still do the slick, cool, actiony stuff and have a solid core story involving space politics and hopefulness.
