They make little money, have zero power, and don't have any position from which to negotiate better working conditions. The other huge difference is Walmart severely limits the number of people in the stores. For example, my local Walmart limit is 150 and it's at least twice as large as the school my kid attends, it's open space, and the interactions with other are limited to seconds. Meanwhile, my wife a teacher will be in 5 cramped classrooms per day with students for 40 minutes a session. I totally agree that Walmarts in southern Ontario can get crowded, but knowing what I know about the virus, I've never felt unsafe in one because contacts with other people in the store are very brief and we're masked. Children are not required to wear masks, only educators. So protection in this regard in schools. Yes, we use staggered drop off times, to keep cohorts separated, schools are also putting measures in place to keep their classes separated, such as specific entrances/entrances for each class. Teachers meeting their students outside and bringing them in as a group, etc.
